hover-room only -- I went and bought an additional thistle feeder, thinking we
would be hosting this explosion of guests for the winter. Suddenly, they seem to
be gone. For the last couple of days, my neighborhood has shrunk back to
the usual dozen or less goldfinches. And not one siskin to be seen. 'Course,
with the extra feeder, the finches can really spread out now, and don't have
to argue over seating. But, has anyone else seen the unusual numbers drop
away? any ideas why?
Hope everyone out there enjoys this thank-full day. ss

Hi all,
My goldfinch numbers dropped off a bit since a couple of weekends ago, when
I had over 60 plus a handful of siskins thrown in. Now the goldfinches are
down to a more manageable 2 dozen or so, with no siskins, though I did see a
brownie Purple Finch in the back trees this morning. My guess is that the warm
weather has driven them elsewhere to feed. The feeders seem to be much slower
than in previous years at this time; again I attribute this to the warm
weather.

Still waiting #80 and keeping my fingers crossed that it is a flock of
Tundra Swans!

PS, I purchased a new nyjer feeder several weeks ago at Target. It is a dome
which holds 2 seed socks below, fillable on the top. It holds a really good
amount and the dome not only holds the extra seed but keeps it dry in the
rain. I have a couple dozen finches at a time clinging and eating away. It's so
much easier for them to eat than the tube feeders with the tiny ports. It's
made by KAYTEE, and comes with 2 extra socks, and more are available
separately. I understand The Backyard Naturalist in Olney is carrying it too.
Reasonably priced too! I should get a commission!

Happy Turkey Day everybody.
