Fort Smallwood Bird Walk: 12/16/07: Waterfowl

Hello all.

A small group of us braved the cold and mist today at Fort Smallwood for the 
monthly bird walk. The Patapsco River and Rock Creek were choppy, but we 
saw good numbers of waterfowl anyway. A Swamp Sparrow added to the fun, 
as well.

Totals:

Common Loon: 2  In flight over the Patapsco
Great Blue Heron: 3 at pond edges
Double-crested Cormorant: 28  'White Rocks' and Patapsco River
Canada Goose: 48
Mallard: 14
American Black Duck: 1 male on the pond
Bufflehead: 30
Lesser Scaup: 900+
Greater Scaup: 150+/-
Common Goldeneye: 8
Canvasback: 30+/- mixed with scaup
Ruddy Duck: 300+ on Rock Creek
Hooded Merganser: 1 female left on the pond
Ring-billed Gull: 35
Herring Gull: 2
Great Black-backed Gull: 4
Bald Eagle: 1 adult over Rock Creek
Blue Jay: 6
Mourning Dove: 32
Rock Pigeon: 3
Red-bellied Woodpecker: 3
Northern Flicker: 1
Downy Woodpecker: 3
Carolina Wren: 4
Carolina Chickadee: 4
Tufted Titmouse: 3
White-breasted Nuthatch: 3
European Starling: 15
Northern Mockingbird: 4
Eastern Towhee: 4  A few really good looks at them
