Hello all,
On Saturday 12/15, Mike Walsh and I covered the area from Hobbs to Hickman on the Denton CBC. We had 63 species, a good showing. The highlight was 4 Purple Finch on County Farm Rd where the powerline crosses. We also had 525 pipit with two huge flocks of 200+ birds. The first was on Andersontown Rd about a mile north of 404, the other was on Corkell Rd. I found a single Rusty BB among a large mixed BB flock on Redden Rd. Waterfowl at the treatment plant were the expected species of Ring-Neck and Ruddy, plus 2 Lesser Scaup and 3 Bufflehead. We did not go to the compilation, so I do not know anything about other results.
On Sunday 12/16, I covered the Whitehaven area on the Salisbury CBC. The weather was not as bad as advertised. The rain had almost ended by dawn, only some lingering drizzle, and the wind did not kick in until afternoon. Even in the wind, there were still pockets of activity. The sun broke through after 3 PM and during a lull in the wind about 4 PM it was actually nice.
I had a weird day in that I missed several easy birds - Mallard, Red-tail, Red-shoulder, GH Owl but made up for it with quality birds. Waterfowl on the Wicomico River from Clara Rd were almost non-existent. A grand total of 9 Bufflehead. On the other hand, both loons were present. The first good bird was an Orange-Crowned Warbler. It was seen on Whitehaven Rd between Capitola Rd and Mezick Rd at the second growth area near the old barn. It was among a mixed flock of sparrows. The second good bird was a Lincoln's Sparrow seen in a cutover area on Mezick Rd about halfway between Whitehaven Rd and the bridge. It sat up on top of a stump pile and posed for scope views for 5 minutes. Very nice. Topped the day off with a flock of 75 Tree Swallows near Whitehaven. I was very happy with 69 species given the weather.
The count as a whole had a similar mix of misses offset by excellent finds. Waterfowl were conspicuously absent with Pintail, Wigeon, Shoveler, Gadwall, Ring-Neck, scaup all misses unless the boat party came through. Also Bobwhite. On the other hand, there were Brown Pelican, American Bittern, Clay-colored Sparrow, Pine Siskin, Brewer's BB and Cave Swallow reported.

Good Birding,
