From around Jug Bay today I saw a few nice birds, but nothing extraordinary
like a crossbill or shrike! I was looking for "winter migrants" here and the best
bird was a Blue-phase Snow Goose, a beauty of a bird. It was loafing on the
water with many (~850) Canada Geese and despite the number of birds its
white head stood out. There were 20 Tundra Swans, about 120 Black Ducks,
35 Mallards, 2 Pintails, 5 C. Mergansers and 1 Ruddy Duck, along with about
350 gulls. The gulls were about half Ringers/half Herring, with 5 Great BBs and
1 Laugher. I saw many C. waxwings (~80) and some finches (22 house, 12
goldfinch, and 3 purple) but no siskins. I saw many sparrows (they continue
to be present in good #s from last weekend, when we had a very good day for
the Christmas Bird Count) but nothing unusual.
Cheers!
