With a rare day off, I went for a walk this AM. The highlight of the trip
was a WINTER WREN I found along the banks of Pipe Creek. One of my favorite
birds for 2 reasons: It can yodel a long cheery song for several seconds
without taking a breath and that impresses me every time. Little bird, big
song. Second, I tend to find it a lot in old growth. There's a nice stand of
it on top of Gaudineer Knob, WV and before we even started on the trail last
year, I looked at it and told Laura we'd probably find a Winter Wren in
there. We were hardly on the trail for 5 minutes before one proved me right.

However, unlike everybody else on this list I did not find a Shrike,
Northern, Southern, Loggerheaded or Non-Loggerheaded. I feel left out. If
somebody could just send one over here ... after all - 'tis the season of
giving.

"All I want for Christmas is my very own Shrike ..." Everybody sing with me
...
