The 41st running of the Crisfield CBC was held on Thursday, the 27th
and was blessed by the best weather in many years. It would be hard
to create a better day for counting, nor to assemble a better crew to
accomplish the task. There may be some minor adjustments yet, but it
appears that 134 species were found. New birds for the count were
GREAT CORMORANT (Wierenga and Davidson) and EARED GREBE (Stasz et
al). Unusual high counts include LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER 39, WOOD DUCK
34 , NORTHERN GANNET 70, AMERICAN BITTERN 3 , SEMIPALMATED PLOVER 5,
GREATER YELLOWLEGS 169, EASTERN PHOEBE 23, BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCH 147,
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET 73, AMERICAN ROBIN 3825, GRAY CATBIRD 31, and
NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW 6. Two species were added during count
week - a SPOTTED SANDPIPER and BREWER'S BLACKBIRD (Sam Dyke). Full
results will be available when the final results are sent to
me. Electronic and/or paper copies will be sent to all participants
and to anyone else requesting them.
