A nice bright colored male Pine Warbler was coming to one of the
platform feeders at the visitor center, Black Hill Regional Park,
Montgomery County, at about 11:30 a.m. today, 1/3/08. Denise Gibbs
at the center said that it had not previously been reported.
The center also had a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches coming to a
peanut feeder. The feeders there are well stocked, very active and
worth watching.
Numbers of waterfowl are still fairly low in Little Seneca
Lake. Highlights for me were a couple of dozen Canvasback and two
drake Common Goldeneye by the Route 121 bridge. American Coot and
Bufflehead were pretty common, and Hooded Mergansers common here and
there. All 6 Common Mergansers I saw were hens. I did not see the
Tundra Swans reported from the lake on January 1 by Elaine Hendricks.
Shallower parts of the lake, particularly in the Ten-mile Creek area,
are frozen up already, but the bulk of the lake is still wide open.
Good Birding.
