These are probably the 5 cranes that have been seen off and on this
December at Altona Marsh in eastern West Virginia (Jefferson? County).

>>Hello Mr. Davis
>>
>>I live on Blue Heron Lane in Hagerstown. This afternoon in our 30 acre
>>field we saw five large birds. My son got out his telescope and is
>>"National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America" and
>>identified the birds as Sandhill Cranes. I did as well. We are used to
>>seeing a blue heron or two, but these were definitely not them. The
>>plumage in the back and the red on the bill, as well as the estimated size
>>from our second floor window point to the sandhill crane. We tried to get
>>some photos with a zoom lens on our 35mm camera. I will have them
>>developed tomorrow.
>>
>>They stayed for several hours, but I'm afraid in my efforts to get a
>>little closer to them for a better shot I scared them away. They flew
>>southwest toward the marsh not far from our house. Hopefully they will
>>visit again tomorrow.
>>
>>I hope this is helpful to you. I Googled the Internet to see who I should
>>report this to. Thanks.
