I went birding on the C&O Canal just east of Lock 38 west to Lock 39 on
Sunday morning, 0715-0930.

Five woodpeckers identified: Pileated Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker,
Red-bellied Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker and Downy Woodpecker.

Also saw a male and female Common Merganser (COME) on a log near the West
Virginia shore.

Other species seen were:

American Crow

American Goldfinch

Belted Kingfisher

Blue Jay

Brown Creeper

Canada Geese

Carolina Wren

Dark-eyed Junco

Eastern Bluebird

European Starling

Fish Crow

Song Sparrow

Tufted Titmouse

White-breasted Nuthatch

One bird not seen was the Bald Eagle, which a runner told me yesterday had
been seen by a lady walking her dog. This morning I met the lady and she
told me she saw the eagle around the 73 mile post which is quite near the
parking lot.
