The gentle snow flurries of mid-day over here brought on some frantic
feeding by the birds. Highlights at my feeders were provided by the Pine
Siskins and the Cardinals. The local Siskin group pulled no new ones out of
the sky, so the population count stayed at 16 which has been the usual high
for the past few days. Somehow the Cardinals do seem to invite their
friends on days like this, for I counted 24 around the house, and I am
certain there were others at the feeding station beside my driveway.
Others included:
Purple Finch 5 (three were brightly colored males)
Goldfinch 20
Red-breasted Nuthatch 2 (some of these have been present most of the
time since Sept of '07)
White-breasted Nuthatch
White-throated Sparrow 30+ at the driveway feeding station and a
dozen elsewhere
Eastern Towhee 3
Fox Sparrow 1
Mourning Dove 12
Song Sparrow 2
Junco 15+
House Finch 8
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1
Tufted Titmouse
Carolina Wren
Carolina Chickadee
Downy Woodpecker
Blue Jay 4
Common Grackle 1
Red-winged Blackbird 6
and a few too many House Sparrows.
