Hello,
Sunday morning I opted not to go to Ocean City and see the Dovekie so that
I could spend less time driving and more time birding.
On Shorters Wharf Road shortly after sun up, there was an impressive flock
of Black Ducks and Hooded Mergansers on the left of the last stand of pines
which are on the right. Also there was a flock of 100+ Tree Swallows
suffering with the cold morning. In the pines were Brown Headed Nuthatch,
Winter Wren, Fox Sparrow, Catbird and many Y R Warblers. About a half a
mile into the marsh from there a Short Eared Owl flew right up to the truck
and stayed next to the road for 2-3 minutes. It was the best look I ever
had. An impressive bird indeed. On the wildlife drive, at the first
intersection which goes either straight or to the left where the Marsh Trail
is now closed due to an eagle nest, there were 11 Fox Sparrows scratching in
the pine needles in the little pine island that forms the southern part of
the intersection. I dont ever remember seeing more than 2 at a time. Very
impressive and very reddish birds. The one I'd seen on Shorters Wharf road
was grayer than these. Anyway, there were many Common Mergs amongst the
geese and regular duck species along the drive. Bald Eagles were in view
just about everywhere but I did not find the Golden Eagle. There were 2 Red
Shouldered Hawks at the S curve on Egypt Road. The flock of Canvasbacks at
Oakley Street has grown since last week. I roughly estimated 2500 along
with 4 Redheads and about 300 Lesser Scaup. The other usual duck species
were present and noteworthy were 2 Horned Grebes close to shore.
It was a good morning with alot of birds to pick through.
