Lisa and I and several other people saw the male
White-winged Crossbill this morning from roughly 8:30
to rougly 8:50 am. People had been there for some
time before our ~7:50 arrival and had not seen it.
The bird appeared in the top of a tree and even though
it was backlit, the white wing bars were visible at
times. Eventually it came down to the sock feeder,
and gave us good looks as it fed head down with some
goldfinches. It disappeared for a few minutes, then
came back for few more minutes, before flying across
Sligo Creek and moving upstream in the tops of Tulip
Poplars.
Kerry Stone -- that part of Sligo Creek Parkway is
always open to car traffic. Sligo Creek Parkway
between Piney Branch Road and Colesville Road is
currently open to car traffic as well. Birders are
there right now waiting for its return.
