I guess it is or will soon be breeding time for BB's.
On SAT while driving to Jefferson, MD i noticed a
Bluebird perched on top of a nest box in a farm field.
I spruced up my yard box, not that it will do any
good. If past years are any indication, only House
sparrows will scope out my box. This box was
purchased at Audubon Naturalist Society, but has been
a total disappointment over these many years. I did
have a BB pair check it out the first year, but not
since. I keep moving it around. Currently, it is
facing east, but is under an eve of my shed – could
that be part of the problem…???
Hi Jim, and all,
I have had Bluebirds checking out my boxes this weekend as well. In fact I
cleaned out last years nest from one, and moved another box to a more
suitable location, easier to mow around. I have 3 boxes in our yard, mostly grass on
around 2 acres. I paced the boxes off from one another yesterday too, and
found the middle one was 100 paces from one, and about 85 paces from the other
(which was used last year for nesting). It will be interesting to see which
gets used this season.
I also moved my recently made Screech Owl box yesterday too. It was in a
poor location and not high enough, so I took it down and hauled it about halfway
up a red oak and mounted it to the trunk about 17 feet up. This is at the far
back of our lot, much further away from the houses and lights associated
with them, in a spot where I can see it from our breakfast room window. Within
minutes of my coming back into the house after moving it, a bluebird was there
checking it out! Must've thought it was the mother of all bluebird boxes!!
Spring is a'comin...
