This is the Voice of the Naturalist, a service of the Audubon
Naturalist Society. This report was completed Tuesday, February 5, at
8:00 a.m.

Top birds this week are PACIFIC LOON* in VA, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE* in
VA, PAINTED BUNTING* in MD and VA, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL* in MD.

Other birds of interest include waterfowl, EARED GREBE, RED-NECKED
GREBE, AMERICAN BITTERN, OSPREY, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE,
gulls including ICELAND and GLAUCOUS, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE*,
SHORT-EARED OWL, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE*, NORTHERN SHRIKE,  ORANGE-CROWNED
and BLACK-AND-WHITE warblers, SNOW BUNTING, BALTIMORE ORIOLE, and
COMMON REDPOLL. 

The PACIFIC LOON* at Kerr Reservoir, Mecklenburg Co, VA, was again
seen on Jan 30 and Feb 3 off of Palmer Point.

The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE* was reported Jan 29 in a residential area of
Williamsburg, VA.

The beautiful male PAINTED BUNTING* frequenting feeders in the Arnold
area of Anne Arundel Co, MD was seen on Feb 2 through Feb 4. He had
been seen from a bike path near Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd and close to
the Asquith View crossing. The PAINTED BUNTING in Verona, Augusta Co,
VA was seen on Jan 29 and Feb 2.
 
The WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL* was again visiting a feeder in a backyard
in Silver Spring, Montgomery Co, MD with sightings on Jan 29 and 31,
and Feb 2, 3, and 4.  It can be seen from Sligo Creek Pkwy a little
less than 1/4 mile west of Colesville Road. Please  do not park along
that stretch of the Parkway.

Two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were spotted in the northernmost mile
of Egypt Road, Dorchester Co, MD on Feb 2 and Feb 3.

A CACKLING GOOSE was found near the end of the wildlife drive at
Blackwater NWR, Dorchester Co, MD on Feb 2. 

A EURASIAN WIGEON was seen at Surrey Crescent in Norfolk, VA on Feb 1.
Two drake HARLEQUIN DUCKS were found off Island 1 of the Chesapeake
Bay Bridge-Tunnel, VA on Feb 2 and Feb 3. More than 180 HOODED
MERGANSERS were reported from Lake Brittle, Fauquier Co, VA on Feb 1.

EARED GREBE sightings include Point Lookout SP, St. Mary's Co, MD, on
Feb 2 and at the entrance to Chincoteague, Accomack Co, VA on Feb 2.
Single RED-NECKED GREBES were seen at Island 2 of the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge-Tunnel on Feb 3, Riverside Park, Alexandria, VA on Jan 30, and
from Yorktown Battlefield Park, VA, on Feb 2. 

An AMERICAN BITTERN was found along Cedar Creek Road, Dorchester Co,
MD on Feb 2.

A very early OSPREY appeared at Point Lookout SP, MD on Feb 3. A
dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was along Cedar Creek Rd near Blackwater
NWR, Dorchester Co, MD on Feb 2. Two immature GOLDEN EAGLES were
spotted along the wildlife drive at Blackwater NWR on Feb 2.

An adult ICELAND GULL was seen on Feb 2 at Fowler Beach, Sussex Co,
DE. Three LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS  and an immature GLAUCOUS GULL
were found at the Prince William Co, VA Landfill on Feb 2. 

A EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE* was seen Feb 2 on Shorter's Wharf Road,
Dorchester Co, MD.

SHORT-EARED OWL reports this week include two seen Feb 3 at the site
near Rectortown, Fauquier Co, VA, two along Cedar Creek Road,
Dorchester Co, MD on Feb 2, two on Green Springs Road near
Gordonsville, VA on Jan 30 and two on the causeway to Chincoteague, VA
on Feb 2.

LOGGERHEAD SHRIKES* were seen at Sky Meadows SP, Fauquier Co, VA on
Feb 2 and at Little River Farm along Rt 15, 8 miles south of Leesburg,
Loudoun Co, VA on Feb 3. 

A NORTHERN SHRIKE reappeared at Cromwell Valley Park, Baltimore Co, MD
on Feb 3. The bird was found close to the bridge on the entrance road
to Sherwood House. 

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found on the grounds of the Hermitage
Foundation in Norfolk, VA on Feb 1. A BLACK & WHITE WARBLER was seen
on Belle Isle, Richmond VA on Jan 29.

SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from Fowler Beach, DE and Cape Henlopen
SP, DE on Feb 2.

A male and a female BALTIMORE ORIOLE were visiting a feeder in
Suffolk, VA on Feb 2.

Two COMMON REDPOLLS perched near the boardwalk at Rehoboth Beach,
Sussex Co, DE on Feb 3.
