I went to Oberlin College in the mid-70's. We had a small colony of totally white Gray
Squirrels living in the quad where my dorm was. Chats with more recent graduates confirm
that there are still white squirrels there.
I didn't own binoculars at the time, so I never was able to determine if they were true
albinos or a leucistic form. Leucistic/albino animals have a much harder time surviving in
the wild, as they are easily visible to predators. I figure the Oberlin white squirrels have
been helped out over the years by living in an area patrolled by frisbee players, raucous
students and squirrel-lovers providing treats...
