This past Sunday, a group of us were birding near Pennyfield Lock. At
the second impoundment (the one with water in it), there was a small
mixed flock of Mallards, 3 American Widgeons, and what we could only
figure was a female Blue-Winged Teal. She was significantly smaller than
the female Mallards and the female Widgeons (about 2/3 to 3/4 the size);
she had an incomplete white eye ring - white arcs above and below with a
faint dark streak through it; dark bill with a small white patch at the
base of the bill; yellow to orange legs; mottled brown feathers on back
and sides. Unfortunately, she wasn't with a male companion.
Thanks for any help.
