After a few weeks out of the country I took the day off and made a shorter-than-usual trip to the Eastern Shore. I made for the Salisbury landfill. Unfortunately the gulls were both skittish and surprisingly elusive, many sitting out of view down the side of the hill or frequenting the far ponds. It took me 90 mins to find a Kumlien's Gull, a very feisty first winter bird that picked a fight with every bird near it in the short time it was in view (here going after a Ring-bill and seeing off a Herring: http://www.harrisbirds.com/Kumliens%20Feb%20Md%201.htm). There were also around half a dozen Lesser Black-back of various ages. I scoped the Talbot Landfill from outside but found just an adult Lesser Black-back amongst the 3 common species, and there were no gulls at all at Tanyard.

The Cambridge waterfront at Oakley St is well worth a visit at the moment. Canvasback, Redhead, American Wigeon and both Scaup (actually just a single, male, of the Greater kind) almost in touching distance. And the numbers of Canvasback - about 1000 in view - are very impressive. Many birds were too close to digiscope really but I was pleased to get this of my favorite duck:
