Actually, the white-winged crossbill IS still coming regularly, but I fear people are missing it by training scopes on the thistle socks. Seems like the logical strategy, since he spent all of Jan and early Feb on the sock, but now he is camping out in the top floor, suction-cupped window feeder. When he's in there, he's probably inconspicuous to those viewing from the road. But I've seen him many times this weekend there. Pretty cool to be 1 foot away from a white-winged crossbill!

Also, a walk at Patuxent National Wildlife Refuge produced incredible numbers of Golden-crowned kinglets...I've never seen so many at one time. One flock contained approx. 75-100 individuals. Also had 2 Red-breasted nuthatches, 1 Brown creeper, and 2 American black ducks.

"There are some who can live without wild things, and some who cannot...like winds and sunsets, wild things were taken for granted until progress began to do away with them. Now we face the question whether a still higher 'standard of living' is worth its cost in things natural, wild, and free. For us of the minority, the opportunity to see geese is more important than television, and the chance to find a pasque-flower is a right as inalienable as free speech."
