Ross and others,
The "hooded" gull show on the Susquehanna often doesn't start until mid to late March.? They typically remain into early April.? The majority of the time, the best viewing is from Port Deposit in the morning hours.
Great find on the Red-necked Grebe!? Wish I didn't skip that area of the river when I was out today!

Subject: [MDOSPREY] Red-Necked Grebe, Susquehanna River
Howdy, all,
Out for a day in the field with The "BirdCouple", Warren and Lisa
Strobel, and Dan "Nervousbirds" Haas. Focused on the lower Susquehanna and
Conawingo Dam in hopes of catching early hooded gulls in migration (Little,
Black-headed, and Bonies). Surprisingly, not a single hooded gull was present
along the river.
However, the bird of the day was definitely a RED-NECKED GREBE, seen
first from the Susquehanna State Park boat landing at Webster Lapidum Road. The
bird was much closer to the Port Deposit side. Later, we saw the same bird
again from the Cecil County side, only 150 meters offshore from the small picnic
area/boat launch in Port Deposit, where 222 turns sharply east and ascends the
riverbank.
The others will be posting the complete list, but just wanted to get
this one out.
Monday's predicted southerly flow and mild temps may change the whole gull
situation, so it's a good time to get out and start looking for those rare
hooded gulls. Conditions should be quite favorable for other early migrants as
well.
Good Birding,
