I went to a few waterfowl spots this morning. Highlights were:

  Violette's Lock (8AM):
White-winged Scoter (2); both looked to be female
Redhead c. 60
Scaup - about 200, of which less than 10% Greater
Small numbers of American Wigeon, Common Merganser, Mallard, Bufflehead, 1 Ring-necked Duck
Lots of Ring-billed heading up river with small nos. of American Herring and one 1st winter Greater Black-backed.
  Only 1 Horned Grebe with c. 10 Pied-billed
Also Great Blues on the rookery on the Va side looking south (how long has that been there?)
And on the towpath, Brown Creeper in song.

  Hughes Hollow:
  Ring-necked Duck c. 250
  Canvasback 10
  American Black Duck 2 overhead
  Hooded Merganser - c 25
American Wigeon - 10, but just 1 Gadwall
Wood Duck - 6 flushed from impoundment on right
Also some Ring-billed Gulls dropped in, probably first gulls I've seen there

Sycamore Landing Rd - splendid cock Ring-necked Pheasant, skulking in undergrowth next to the road. A release by the Izaak Walton folk?

Black Hills - very little waterfowl. About 20 Redhead by the bridge, with some Ruddy Duck and Buffleheads. Some Canvasback, Common Merganser and Canada Geese down by the Boat Ramp.

  Regards
