Hi Everyone,

A group of five of us came together and headed west yesterday (3/9), the
earliest of us departing the Eastern Shore in the nether-time of official
springing forward. As we dropped cars at park-and-rides and pushed west,
the temperatures dropped quickly and the snow began to fall heavily. Just
after dawn, standing in the snow at Mountain Lake, it was me, Jim
Brighton, Tom Feild, Hans Holbrook, Mikey Lutmerding, and a Sandhill Crane
- a suspicious gathering if ever there was one.

Mikey had been there waiting for us low-landers, gesturing, as we arrived,
that the crane had just flown. This joke will never, ever get old.

Watching the crane slowly strut among the geese in the falling snow was a
memorable sight. It is also an excellent sighting for the county. We
understand this to be only the second record for Garrett (first in 1989?).
As Matt Hafner and I discussed last night, hopefully a prospective mate
will join this bird--the habitat actually isn't bad. Matt noted, however,
that the northwestern PA birds nest off of the Allegany Plateau. Still,
it's a long shot worth keeping an eye on.

After enjoying the crane as long as possible in the biting wind, we moved
on. Our route took us to many of the best water areas between Oakland and
western Frederick County. Most water in Garrett was frozen, including
Broadford, most of Deep Creek, and Piney Res.
