Two years ago, I noticed a starling with a mouthful of witch hazel blossoms
duck into a gap on the side of a covered rain gutter. A few days later, nest
materials were sticking out. We removed the nest and sealed the gap.
A few minutes ago, I saw a starling (same bird?) land in the witch hazel,
tear off a mouthful of flowers, and land on the gutter cover. He looked down
at the now closed gap, tried to stuff the flowers in a smaller gap,
but realized
he couldn't fit inside, flew down to see if he could get in from below, tried
each spot one more time, and finally flew away.
Starlings are far from my favorite bird, but there's something very endearing
about a starling in the springtime with a beak full of yellow flowers.
