Since I have been curious about Quarry Lake anyway, upon seeing
Kevin's post about the Goshawk, Mark Linardi and I decided to take a
quick look. We only spent about 20 minutes there because of the fierce
cold wind.
We didn't see anything like a Goshawk. Mainly we saw several Turkey
Vultures and a Black Vulture, two Canada Geese, Ring-billed Gulls, a
Pigeon and a song sparrow. After I had lunch (see below), I drove
around the rest of the development, which is mainly two blocks of
condos now, and added a Kestrel to the list.
The lake is a new residential development but includes a collection of
very convenient stores. There are parking spots along the lake as well
as in the shopping area. I did not see anything suggesting the public
was not welcome around the lake, which is a big old quarry, slowly
being filled in. There are even benches scattered along the lakeside,
at least the north side.
I was pleased to see that one of the stores was a "California
Tortilla" restaurant, which Paul Noell and I discovered a month ago in
Silver Spring near the WW Crossbill spot. There is also a "Ciao!
Italian Bistro," Boardwalk fries, etc. So it's a handy place that
could be considered after birding Lake Roland or Cylburn. Here's a
list of what's there now:
http://www.quarrylakecommunity.com/shops/ . So you can keep looking
for the Goshawk while having various good munchies.
Quarry Lake is off of Greenspring Ave (west side) at Quarry Lake Dr
about a mile south of the Baltimore Beltway.
