Seen this morning, March 15, at the Yellow-crowned Night Heron "tennis court" nest sight, a single bird roosting after the long trip back.

This early arrival date shatters my previous record of last year, March 22, by a full week!

For the past couple weeks, I have been monitoring all the nest sites along Sligo Creek between Colesville Road and New Hampshire Avenue on a daily basis. This morning just one Yellow-crowned Night Heron was at the nest site just upstream from the intersection of Sligo Creek Parkway and Piney Branch Road. From the parking lot by the tennis court, proceed on foot upstream to a bridge crossing the creek. The nests (two at the moment left from last year) are plainly visible looking upstream from the bridge. The lone arrival was roosting by these nests - no other birds were present at the several nest sites between Colesville Road and New Hampshire Avenue. Right now is a great time to find last year's nests because of the lack of foliage. Look for twig nests - not the leafier nests squirrels make - over the creek and Parkway. Other nests could appear as the season progresses; last year, a new nest was found near Sligo Creek Parkway and Worth Avenue.

Also saw and heard the usual suspects, including several Phoebes near the White-winged Crossbill site (though no Crossbill).
