My lovely wife Emery and our Son Declan went to Merkle in PG County
this afternoon for a brief hike. We were accompanied by Emery's
sister Eliza and her beau Chris Murray. Chris has spent lots of time
over the last few years deep in the jungles of Peru and other South
American countries studying Macaws. So, today while we did some
'birding by ear', he remarked that the Merkle birds didn't have that
Spanish accent that he is accustomed to hearing.

Even still it was a great day.

I thought the weather was supposed to be cold and rainy. I was
planning to stay inside today and do paperwork. If this great weather
keeps up, I may never get those taxes done.

Location: Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary, PG County, MD
Observation date: 3/15/08
Notes: One RED HEADED WOODPECKER was dead hanging from a tree. It
looked like it died in an apparent territory dispute. The carcass was
hanging from the tree, looking uneaten but slightly weathered. Photos
will soon be posted on the blog.

Around 5:30 this evening, I quickly dropped by the boat ramp in West
Annapolis to check on the RED NECKED GREBE. It was still doing it's
thing in our neighborhood creek. On the way home I noticed an
unusually large gathering of GRACKLES. Our neighborhood is grackle
central this time of year... but even this was impressive.
