Eileen,
I've found that the amount of white in the wings is far more substantial in
the black capped. It's the best field marker that I've found.
There is more rust on the Pacific variant of the black capped. One the east
coast this is not as distinctive.
However we have some stellar birders in MD that may provide far better
guidance. You might want to check out the photo differences between the two
species on my website:

Thanks,
Eric

Subject: [MDOSPREY] Black Capped Chickadee or Carolina
I have been watching the Chickadees in my yard and it seems to me that I
see some that have a rusty color on their sides. Some darker than others.
I have always thought that I only see the Carolina Chickadee, can I also see
the Black Capped Chickadee here at Prettyboy?
Does the Carolina also have the rusty color on their sides, my guide book
does
not show the color on the Carolina's side.
