I hiked around and deep into the trails at Waterworks Park late this
afternoon. I was looking / listening for a Louisiana Waterthrush,
after reading today's reports that they're setting up territories now.
No luck this afternoon, but I will try again soon. Waterworks is a
great park, but it requires a permit. It also backs up to the old
Annapolis Landfill, which is great for all sorts of birds. Sadly,
that area is not easily accessible. Waterworks Park, located in the
headwaters of the South River has some great areas for birds like
Louisiana Waterthrush. I'm optimistic that one (or more) will set up
a territory here soon.

The park is a nice spot for migrants to drop in, should they find
themselves over the Annapolis area some morning. Trouble is, the park
sits right off of Rt. 97 and Rt. 50, so it can be a tad... well...
loud. The leaves help, but as of yet... the din of the highway is
only being baffled by buds.

Enough description, this afternoon I saw / heard:

Canada Goose 10 (It was entertaining watch all these goose couples
argue with other couples over territory, or so it seemed)
Wood Duck 2
Mallard 2
Great Blue Heron 1
Osprey 1 (NOT observing the strict 'catch and release' rules that
are clearly posted on the sign at the entrance.)
hawk sp. 1
Mourning Dove 1
Red-bellied Woodpecker 2
Downy Woodpecker 3
Hairy Woodpecker 1
Pileated Woodpecker 1
Eastern Phoebe 2
Blue Jay 2
American Crow 2
Tree Swallow 4 (Nice to see them back. I noticed there was PLENTY
of bugs flying about for them to eat.)
Carolina Chickadee 5
Tufted Titmouse 5
White-breasted Nuthatch 1
Carolina Wren 2
Golden-crowned Kinglet 11 (The park was teeming with them this afternoon.)
American Robin 2
Pine Warbler 1
Song Sparrow 3
White-throated Sparrow 1
Northern Cardinal 4
Red-winged Blackbird 55
Rusty Blackbird 1 (One lone bird, in the heart of one of the
stream beds where I was listening for a Louisiana.)
