Peregrine show

On my way home from work yesterday (Thurs, 3/27) I was treated to a wonderful show by a pair of Peregrines - at the intersection of M St. & New Jersey Ave in SE (right at the Navy Yard Metro station). At one point one bird (the female? - seemed bigger than the other) landed on the ledge of a building and started calling. I could hear it over my ipod.

I'm sure this is the same pair that hangs around the RR bridge over the Potomac. I haven't seen those birds recently, but I'm not sure if that's because I'm crossing the river too late or if they've found a preferred hangout, perhaps somewhere in the Navy Yard area.

I also wonder if these birds would be a threat to the pair of Kestrels that nest in this area (either on the DOT building or the building across the street). That pair showed up a few weeks ago and I see them fly by my window. But if the Peregrines set up house around here, would they drive off (or try to eat?) the kestrels?

As a side story, back in Jan or Feb I was sitting at my desk and out of the corner of my eye I thought I saw a snowflake go by my window (snow was forecasted that afternoon). I dismissed it, but a few minutes later I saw another. This time I looked more closely and realized that they weren't snowflakes but were, in fact, feathers. Closer inspection revealed that one of the Peregrines was on the ledge right above my window and was plucking a pigeon. I could only see the tail and wingtips of the Peregrine, unfortunately, but it was nice to know that it was spending the day right outside my office.

Good birding,
