MD/DC birders:
I am tardy reporting a singing FOS WARBLING VIREO at the C&O Canal,
Fletcher's Boathouse, Washington, DC, on Thursday, April 24. I also
saw the previously reported PROTHONOTARY WARBLER on the River Trail
upriver from Fletcher's, near the area that is popular with
fishermen. Easily spotted by its growing piles of assorted detritus,
unfortunately. Also in the area was a singing male ORCHARD
ORIOLE. It may have been too late in the day, but for whatever
reason I could not locate any Yellow-throated Warblers, previously
reported by Wallace Kornack and Gary Allport.
This morning, April 25, at the Meadowside Nature Center in Rock Creek
Regional Park, Montgomery County, Joy Bowen and I had 2 LOUISIANA
WATERTHRUSH, 4 NORTHERN PARULA, 1 PINE WARBLER, 1 PRAIRIE WARBLER and
2 COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. Just before we left at about midday we heard
a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER and heard and saw a YELLOW-THROATED
VIREO. But it was pretty quiet birdwise out there, with just a few
Yellow-rumped Warblers and many House Wrens. The place was otherwise
overrun with school kids enjoying an environmental class -- we were
particularly impressed with the "Carnivore" team, all boys of course
(big surprise).
