This afternoon I had a couple of hours to get out so I headed to a few
locations around Carroll County. The first location that I visited was the
New Windsor Wetlands behind The New Windsor Middle School. I was hoping to
kick up a bittern but had no luck. It was here that I found my GOLDEN-WINGED
WARBLER and BOBOLINK. The Bobolink flew less than 20 feet right over my head
in full song and landed in a tree near the basketball court by the parking
lot. The Golden-winged Warbler was in full song in the tree line between the
wetland and the sewage ponds just to the east.
From there I made a few other unproductive stops (unproductive as in not
adding new species for the day) before stopping along the wetlands next to
Brown Road north of Westminster. There were still lots of White-throated
Sparrows in song on the north side of the road here. In the marshy area on
the south side of the road I had one SORA call spontaneously in response to
my hand clapping. I had hoped for possibly a Virginia Rail with no luck. The
Sora was a nice consolation prize. There wasn't much else to report in the
wetlands and the surrounding area.
