Hi Everyone,

This morning Peter Barnes and I found a Red-headed Woodpecker on Laws Rd in Wicomico County. The woodpecker was near the area where Sam Dyke found the big flock of shorebirds last week (directions below). Peter heard the bird in the distance, and then we found it by scoping a distant stand of dead trees to the west of the road--a nice adult! The only shorebirds we saw here today were about 80 Black-bellied Plovers.

Later on Twilley's Bridge Rd an adult Broad-winged Hawk flushed from the side of the road and perched within view for a minute or so before moving deeper into the woods.

Grasshopper Sparrows (4 individuals seen) were easily viewed on the fence next to Twilley's Bridge Rd behind the airport near the small cemetery.

We were back to Salisbury by 9 am after a great morning with the birds of the Nassawango.

Have fun,

Ron Gutberlet

The Red-headed Woodpecker was about a mile south of Wango Rd just before Laws Rd curves to the east near Beech Island Creek (MD/DE DeLorme Atlas p. 34). Laws Rd can be reached by following Mt Hermon Rd (Rt 350) from Salisbury toward Powellville. Laws Rd is on the right a few miles past the Salisbury Airport.
