On Tuesday Ron Gutberlet and I did a bird blitz on some TNC land on the SW edge of Sharptown. Habitats there included some swamp forest, upland pine forest, and sandy old-field containing impressive quantities of prickly pear cactus. The numbers we found of the primary and secondary target species are listed below. These will be compiled with results of other surveys in this region, being coordinated by Charlie Stegman of the Tri-County Bird Club, to document the candidate Nanticoke Important Bird Area.

Primary targets
Northern Bobwhite 2
Wood Thrush 1
Prothonotary Warbler 4
Worm-eating Warbler 2
Prairie Warbler 8 (includes additonal pine areas further south along Sharptown Rd)

Secondary targets
i) Shrubland species
White-eyed Vireo 6
Brown Thrasher 2
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Eastern Towhee 3
Field Sparrow 1

ii) Forest-interior Dwelling Species
Hairy woodpecker 1
Acadian Flycatcher 1
Red-eyed Vireo 1
Ovenbird 3
Summer Tanager 3

Anyone interested in doing Bird Blitz surveys to help identify Important Bird Areas can see a map of candidate sites and download forms and instructions from the Maryland-DC IBA website at http://www.audubonmddc.org/SciCon_IBAs.html Please e-mail me with any questions about Bird Blitz.

Go birding with a purpose!
