Thanks to the half-dozen or so of you that gave suggestions
regarding the mystery call I heard from (the woods next to)
a neighbor's field in Laurel yesterday afternoon. Once
again, here are the recordings:

Gratifyingly, this appears to be a tough ID (so it's not
just me!).
Two people suggested ACADIAN FLYCATCHER and noted the
fluttering sound after the chirp is reminiscent of the
flycatcher's flight call (they also pointed out that the
sound is audible in the Stokes' bird call recordings -- I've
since listened again and agree that this ID seems
plausible).
Other suggestions included Willow Flycatcher, Wild Turkey,
Eastern Towhee, and even Eastern Chipmunk (surprisingly I've
not seen a chipmunk in our area since moving here 2 years
ago).
Thanks for everyone's help! If I get any more data (like a
sighting this time), I'll report it here.
