All,

An email response from Bill, the owner of the West Annapolis Wild Bird Center:

Dan:

We have never carried 50lb bags as the risk of injury is too great for
the seed hauler (me!) So, we don't know what we would charge for
them.

The Wild Bird Center in Bowie has always carried big bags of seed and
probably stocks 40lb. bags. That is the best source I know if someone
absolutely needs a huge bag. In general, the price per pound
advantage for buying one 40 lb bag is not very great over buying 2
20lb bags which have handles and are easier to tote.

Yes, this seed has spiked in price, dramatically. Not only has our
government's subsidy of corn production for ethanol resulted in the
wholesale switch of farmers to corn, but also, the fast food companies
such as McDonalds have all switched to sunflower oil for frying
without transfats. Result is a big price spike for remaining
sunflower production.

Bill
