I looked for Black Tern at Jug Bay yesterday eve with no luck, but was very surprised to see a large number of herons and egrets, perhaps the most I have seen here at one time. Between 7:20-40, I saw:

Great Blue Heron 15
Great Egret 18
Snowy Egret 1
Cattle Egret 2

Plus I saw a distant flock of 30+ small egrets at the south end of Jug Bay flying low and down the Patuxent River; Unfortunately I did not see where they came from and only got a brief view. I was unable to identify due to the distance, low light and brief view. I did manage to get two quick counts and got 30 and then 32 birds. My guess (based on my gut feeling only) is that they were Cattle Egrets. I assume the big flock was looking for a place to roost given the time and their altitude.

All of the egrets were roosting together except the flock of 30+, and the 2 Cattle Egrets. Total was 66 herons and egrets!
