Milford Mill Park is in Baltimore County along the western part of the
Baltimore Beltway about a mile north of Liberty Road. On maps it is
often referred to as Villa Nova Park, but the sign at the loop trail
where we normally go birding says "Milford Mill." It is on Milford
Mill Rd across from Scott's Hill Dr.
From The Baltimore Beltway (I-695) take the Liberty Rd west and keep
right. At the first traffic light (about 2 blocks from the exit) turn
right on Washington Lane. Then in about a half mile, at a traffic
light, turn right on Milford Mill Rd. After the next light, just
beyond the Beltway overpass, turn right into the parking area.
There is a one-mile paved loop trail from the parking area. I usually
start by going clockwise along the stream since the relative openness
makes the birds more active early. When you go around the 180 degree
bend about a halfway around the loop, you go into a higher area of
mature forest away from the stream, which is attractive to thrushes,
mainly in the spring. That side has been pretty dull so far this fall,
but it can have a good many warblers in the spring such as Hooded,
Black-throated Blue, and tall-tree-loving warblers along with
thrushes.
The traffic noise at the parking area is pretty awful, but it gets a
lot better as you go around the loop, especially on the stream side.
There is usually a porta-potty at the parking area.
