We still have at least 2 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds in our yard, one of
which is an immature male. I watched him sample just about every
blossom on the Texas Sage. A huge bumblebee (at least half the size of
the hummer) was working the same patch and eventually moved into the
hummer's personal space. The hummer followed the bee for 30 seconds or
so, but must have decided it wasn't worth an attack & flew off to perch.
I planted two of the Texas sage last year and was disappointed when I
could not find any in the stores this year. Needless concern. The
original plants did not overwinter, but they left tons of progeny which
fed the hummers all season. This is the first year where we have had
reliable presence of a male hummer for the entire summer.
