Hi everyone,

Highlights of Saturday 9/20 at Little Bennett Regional Park (Montgomery County) included a Rose-breasted Grosbeak, a Winter Wren, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and
several warbler species including Black-throated Green, Black-throated Blue,
Magnolia, Black-and-White, and Common Yellowthroat.

Highlights of Sunday 9/21 along generally the same route:
Tennessee Warbler (and the warblers mentioned above), Swainson’s Thrushes, Wood
Thrushes, a flyover Common Raven, Yellow-billed Cuckoo (heard only) -- and a rather close encounter with a Sharp-shinned
Hawk.

I also heard an odd sound that I couldn’t identify. It
sounded bird-like – a rather loud, long upward whine, but not quite like any hawk
or owl (or blue jay imitation) that I’ve ever heard. It was definitely coming
from within a rather dense stand of trees, and I lingered in the area for a
good ten minutes or so, but there was no sign of the bird (or other critter) and
I didn’t hear it again. I’m leaning toward a hawk call that I don’t know well,
and I’ll go through my CDs and other resources later this week, but if anyone
has any ideas, I’d appreciate it! :)

Other birds across one or both days (and I’m sure I’m
forgetting a few) included:
