Hello, everyone:
I've just returned from spending the past four weeks in Reading PA,
where I was helping out following the birth of my second grandchild.
(Although it was wonderful getting to know my granddaughter,
I finally broke down and started a PA list.)
Anxious to get back on the trail (as it were), I went up to Middle
Patuxent Environmental Area in Howard County this afternoon.
About halfway between the Trotter Road parking lot and the start
of the Wildlife Loop, I got a brief look at an odd warbler. It was
gray above and all white below, with two distinct yellow wing bars.
Because I was viewing it from below, I did not see any details on
the head. I'm inclined to call it a Brewster's Warbler - my first-ever
Vermivora hybrid. Although the resident birds were fairly active,
the only other migrant I saw was a single Red-eyed Vireo.
I also went around to the South Wind Circle side, where it was even
quieter and the only noteworthy bird was a female BLUE GROSBEAK
(a county bird for me), in the overgrown area behind the houses.
Looking forward to what's left of fall migration,
Elaine Hendricks
