This sighting is a few miles outside of Maryland, but Ospreyers might
be interested. Since mid-September, a WCPI has been present in a pond
at the Huntfield subdivision south of Charles Town, WV. The pond holds
a shifting population of waterfowl and shorebirds, recently including
several shovelers, blue-winged teal, pectoral sandpipers, etc. The
pintail associates both with the shovelers and the teal. Because it
appeared in the wake of hurricane Hanna, some area birders believe
that it blew in naturally. Others are skeptical. So far as I know, the
records committee has not made a determination. In any event, it's a
very pretty bird, and the pond is worth a visit. Going west from
Frederick on US 340, take 340 South at Charles Town and go about 4
miles to Augustine Ave. Turn right. Huntfield is just ahead on the
left. In the subdivision, take the 1st right until you see the pond on
your right.
Enjoy!
