Jim (and all),
Your friend is a good example of a hunter putting in more than he takes
out. My experience is that is the case for most hunters, although not to
the scale he is able to do. Some will say it is for selfish reasons but
I don't think the birds care why they have habitat, just that they
finally do.
I'm sure the loss of habitat is the prime reason for the decline of any
of our birds. George Jett said it best with his comment to build up, not
out. If we don't leave homes for the birds because we insist on
destroying places so we can live/build there then we shouldn't be
surprised when we see less of the original inhabitants. For folks on the
list who oppose hunting I would suggest that your effort is better spent
being anti-sprawl instead, you'll save more habitat for the birds (and I
won't have to delete the flame or two I'm about to get *lol*).
Good birding all,
