Here is a directory for Wildlife and Heritage Staff,

McKee is directly managed by Central Region manager Ken D'Loughy.

This is a message for Mark Hoffman (see below George's msg) -

Mark, do you know to whom at DNR I would address concerns regarding land
use planning at McKee-Beshers? It is common knowledge among butterfly
enthusiasts (if not birders) that land use planning decisions in this
wildlife management area have drastically reduced butterfly diversity in
the past 15-20 years.

I would also be curious to know how bird diversity and abundance have
changed over the same period. Of course with birds (which aren't so
local as butterflies) there are numerous factors over and above the
environmental health of Hughes Hollow that affect their populations.
Maybe Paul Woodward could address this.

Folks

Much of the Bobwhite hunting down my way is on private farms, and are

generally released birds. Perhaps DNR has to or should take this type
of

hunting into concern with their regulations. Probably development is
much

more of a stress on the life of Bobwhite Quail then hunting. Build up,
not

out.

Next topic. What do we do about hunting Black Bear? Perhaps we could
hire

returning pacification troops from Iraq to quell the violence the bears
are

causing in western MD.

Just stirring the pot.

George

Lance-in my capacity as a DNR employee (formerly of the wildlife unit
for 20

years) I suggest you feel free to contact our upland game bird biologist

(Bob Long, ) so you may more fully address your

concerns.

The issues associated with quail populations, habitat, hunting, etc.
are

well know to the Department.

Thank you.

Do you care if there is an open season on quail?

I think that one of the great responses I received about

our bobwhite crisis is that "if DNR has statistics of [quail]

population estimates" then where are they finding this info?

It is my understanding that the State of MD has put

this species "AT RISK."

Maybe not on Sunday evening - but why can't we shake

our government's awareness of this hypocritical legislature

action tomorrow?

Best wishes,

Lance
