After we bought a house in Calvert County, we were chagrined to hear
from perhaps MD's leading ornithologist that migrant passerines tend to
by-pass that county. So we consider it a blessing whenever we do find
any migrants in our yard - the more so since we are close to neither the
Bay, the Patuxent, or any body of water, nor any fields or woods.
Today was such a day, with so many E Phoebe's that a wave of them must
have been passing through (as sometimes happens with that species). Also
seen were
N Flicker
R-thr Hummer (a bit late)
Red-eye V
Ruby-cr Kinglet
Swainson's Thrush
N Parula
Pine W (local breeder)
Bay-br W
Blackpoll W
A. Redstart
Myrtle W's (first of year)
Scarlet Tgr
Recent week-ends have also found Yellow, Palm, Cape May, and Magnolia
Warblers.
The hummer enjoys our feeders but also our big, stamen-bearing Zinnia's,
both red and purple. May she be succeeded by other representatives of
her family in the coming months!
