This weekend I was able to do some birding in different parts of western Maryland. Even though the trip was to see the fall foliage. We stopped at Finzel Swamp early yesterday before heading to Deep Creek. The was a large flock of Robins, probably the most I have ever seen. We also saw a large flock of maybe sparrows or could they be female Cowbirds? Do they travel in large flocks? I was hoping maybe someone could help with the id on the sparrow type bird I saw at Finzel.
I heard mostly woodpeckers, chickadees and nuthatches and Blue Jays at Muddy Creek and Swallow Falls. We made a quick stop at New Germany lake I was surprised to see a Green Heron near the lakeshore. Another quick stop was at the Savage River reservoir where I saw and heard many Killdeer. Also a cool sighting of a Kingfisher hovering above the reservoir. This morning heading home we stopped at the Rocky Gap Lake and hiked part of the lake loop trail. I believe I saw A White Throated Sparrow in the brush along the trail.
