John, and all,
I was surprised on Sundays Big Sit at Black Hill Regional Park to find so
much recent beaver activity at the "woodsy" end of the lake, near where we do
the sit, in the corner opposite the boat ramp. There are 2 lodges along the
banks (one very large and fairly new) and the beavers have dammed the small
stream (Ten Mile Creek?) which flows into the lake there. Last year there were
numerous small willows growing out of the lake; this year none. Almost all of
the dead tree snags are toppled, but perhaps if the damming works, in the
future there will be a nice stand of dead trees further back in the woods. Who
knows, maybe the Red-headed Woodpeckers will make a return...
