I spent most of today in central Allegany County (where the fall color
is still quite nice, by the way).

Highlights at Rocky Gap State Park (land birds were mostly near the
amphitheater parking lot):

LONG-TAILED DUCK - 2 hens
Bufflehead - 5 or 6
Ruddy Duck - 12
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 1
Red-breasted Nuthatch - 1
White-breasted Nuthatch - 2 or 3
Dark-eyed Junco - several
PINE SISKIN - 15
American Goldfinch - 20+

C & O Canal Terminus, Cumberland:

Canada Goose - 200+ (my 1st county closeout!)
Hooded Merganser - 4
Killdeer - a dozen or so
Dunlin - 1

On the way home, I stopped by Little Orleans on the C & O Canal:

Eastern Phoebe - 1
Common Raven - 1
Cedar Waxwing - many
Yellow-rumped Warbler - several
White-throated Sparrow - 12+
Purple Finch - 1 brownie

I also had an odd chickadee at Little Orleans. It sounded like
the Carolinas that we have down here in the flatlands, but it had
bright white cheeks (like a Black-capped) and a trace of white in
the wing. One of those pesky intergrades, perhaps. Other
individuals in the same area were clearly black caps.

Finally, driving along Pearre Road in southwestern Washington
County, I came upon a Barred Owl sitting beside the road on a post.
