I just returned home to Bethesda Saturday evening after a day's
birding on the Eastern Shore with an ANS waterfowl identification
class I'm teaching. We arrived in the early afternoon at Eastern
Neck Island NWR and ran into DC birder Paul DeAnna, who quickly
alerted us to the presence of a Western Kingbird he and another
birder had seen this morning (November 22) near the refuge's visitor center.
At around 3 p.m. we had excellent views of the Western Kingbird in a
short grass field right by the gravel road that leads from the main
north-south refuge road to the Visitor Center. The Kingbird was with
a group of Eastern Bluebirds and Savannah Sparrows. When we left the
refuge at about 4 p.m. Walter Ellison was actively searching for the bird.
I'll post about the waterfowl sightings we had today at a later
time. I just wanted to get this message to MDOsprey this evening, in
case some birders want to try for the Kingbird on Sunday. Paul said
he would not have access to e-mail today so would not yet be able to
post this sighting.
