Chuck Chalfant's post the other day inspired brilliance in Amy when she suggested we spend thanksgiving morning at the Conowingo Dam in MD looking for Eagles. I was downright giddy at the prospect since we had never seen the winter Eagle show at Conowingo. I mused to Amy that if Ben Franklin had his way and the Turkey was made the symbol of America we would be waking up tomorrow to go look at turkeys and we would all be sitting down to eat Eagle for dinner. She was skeptical. Either way Conowingo Dam did not disappoint. Amy stopped counting at 75 BALD EAGLES (Photos) and the photographer next to us estimate about 125 eagles. It was great fun I must say. I posted a picture with 10 eagles in one scope view to our Flickr and I'm sure I will put some more Eagle shots up later. There were Eagles everywhere.
On the way home we stopped at the Coatesville Reservoir and let me tell you there were CANADA GEESE Everywhere there! Wow. Huge numbers for such a small body of water. There were a lot of interesting geese around including some interesting Lesser Canada with some pretty stubby bills, but I didn't see anything I could say was a Cackling and I didn't see the previously reported Brant but there were a lot of birds. There were a few RUDDY DUCKs, RING-NECKED DUCKS, and an adorable and active couple (male and female) of HOODED MERGANSERS (Photo) that put on a fantastic show. The male was really strutting his stuff. All in all a beautiful and memorable Thanksgiving. Happy Holidays to you all!
