Would a second pair of eagles nest in such close proximity to the other pair?? I thought eagles nested in a given territory so if the second nest is active wouldn't that mean that the older nest is likely to have been abandoned?? It'll be interesting to see what happens but given the location I guess it'll be harder to actually see.? Maybe the eagles just wanted more privacy?

I went over to the C&O canal park at Great Falls today for my somewhat
regular walk. The ranger at the contact station, who knows me, and knows I
am a birder said, "Well, now we have two eagle nests on Conn island." I
said,."Oh? Who says.?" He told me someone had told him there was a second
nest that is visible now that all the leaves are off the trees. I was
skeptical, but took the river trail and looked carefully. It appears that
the ranger was/is correct. From the river trail, looking at Conn Island,
from the Maryland side, to the left of the old nest and few rows of trees
back, there is a large stick nest that looks like many eagle nests I have
seen. It will be interesting to see if there is a second pair of eagle
nesting there when nesting season gets going in mid February. I'd be
interested in any one else's opinion on that second stick nest.
