On Thursday, Dec 4, I found two Cackling Geese within a pretty large
flock of Canada Geese that was congregated in a wheat field beside Presquile
Road. Great numbers of the Canada Geese were scattered around in the
several nearby fields, but most could be scanned with binoculars or even a
scope without getting spooked. This part of Presquile road has little
traffic and decent shoulders to use, so viewing is pretty safe. Location -
this was the part of Presquile Road to the west of Pickering Creek Audubon
Center. Exiting the Audubon Center lane, go to the right, and just keep on
going. Follow the road until you find the fields of geese. Eventually
Presquile Road splits to north and south. Geese may be found in any of the
several fields in that area.

Back home today I had the surprise of finding and spooking an American
Woodcock near my compost pile. I have seen them here in springtime several
times, and once in early summer, but this is the first one that I have
noticed at this time of year.
